What should you wear for your family photos? It isn’t always top of mind when you book a photography session, but wardrobe is really one of THE most important factors that will affect the overall look of your images.
This is why I plan this in advance with my clients and offer a wardrobe to make it so easy for them! I realize that styling often falls to the moms, and let’s be honest, moms with little ones don’t have the liberty of going to multiple stores to try on dresses and find something that will look flattering. Also, who wants to spend money on clothing you will likely not wear again?
I have over 50 dresses and tops in my client wardrobe, in a variety of sizes from small-xxl for moms to choose from. My dresses follow a neutral and muted palette in both warm and cool tones. This pallette looks really beautiful with bright and airy photos, and minimizes distraction, allowing your family to be the focus of your images. What we wear in our normal lives is not always the best choice for photos. You should be going a bit dressier than you normally would and choosing fabrics that photograph well.
Moms, you are the star of the show. You are likely the one who is usually taking the photos of your kids, and this is your turn to be in them so they have those memories of how much you adore them. It’s important for you to look and feel great in these memories.
When choosing outfits, look for neutral and organic tones, and textured and/or flowy fabrics like stretch lace or linen. Maxi dresses and are a great choice for moms. Choose a dress that is flattering for your body type and doesn’t cling too tightly so bra and underwear lines are visible.
Some great places that I find beautiful pieces for moms are Free People, ASOS, Zara, Red Dress, Baltic Born, Morning Lavender, Vici Dolls, Nothing Fits But, and Nordstrom.
If you are not a dress person and prefer a more casual look, a nice flowy top with lace detailing, or a neutral chunky sweater paired with a maxi skirt or light coloured pants is also a great option
For baby girls and boys, a cute romper, dress, or overalls in muted and pastel tones can look really lovely and allow for those sweet baby details to be captured (e.g. think cute toes and cheeky rolls). Styles like the ones below are also great for hiding diapers. I have lots of these in my client wardrobe and my favourite places to find them are H&M, Zara, and local and online baby boutiques. For newborns, I have a variety of neutral swaddles and accessories that I will bring to your session, so your baby can be in a simple white onesie.
What about the Dads?
Dads often have what they need in their closet. If not, I have lots of tops in the studio wardrobe for the dads to use. A white, grey, or light blue Henley tee, or ironed collared shirt is great. Pair it with khaki or light grey pants, to keep it simple and classic. I recommend against wearing dark and medium coloured blue jeans for neutral and airy style portraits, because the blue really stands out (not in a good way) and draws your eye right to it. You can find pieces like those pictured below at H&M, Zara, the Gap, Banana Republic and even Marks.
Little girls look sweet in white, beige, or pastel dresses or rompers. Simple is better, avoid loud colours and distracting patterns. Look for little details like lace and dainty florals. Some of my favourite places to find sweet and organic looking clothing are H&M, Zara, and Marshalls. For little boys, a henley tee or neutral sweater and khakis is great, and you can even add suspenders for a dose of extra cuteness.
